"His Sound" (SOLD)

$8,300.00

4’ x 6’

Can you imagine the sound of myriads of ocean shorelines, all swelling and crashing simultaneously? Think about the crushing sound of Niagara falls. The bible is filled with people describing this kind of sound when attempting to recount their experience hearing the voice of God. What a breath taking thought.

I wanted to make a couple of pieces that give an inspired take on the voice of God. I have been wanting to work with drum cymbals for a while now. I love that they swell and crash like ocean waves. I love how they oxidize and take on an aquatic color when you introduce sea salt to them. I love how difficult the material is to work with. I like the scarred up and sometimes bloody hands that are inevitable; it’s a good fight with a sweet reward.

While making this piece I was reminded of the calm body of water between two bodies of land that we call a “Sound”. I spent a great portion of my early childhood swimming and playing in the Bogue sound of the NC crystal coastline. It’s a calm inlet of water connected to the mighty Atlantic ocean.

Listen for His sound, and let it create a “sound” within you. Do you need a sound mind and a sound heart today? Listen for His sound; He’s speaking.

This piece was created out of old donated drum cymbals that were arduously beaten with a three pound hammer to get the imperfect yet more rounded breaks. They were then patinated using course ground sea salt and vinegar. The background is made of sand and crushed us seashells collected from the NC coast.
