Caves have always been a source of wonder for me. These naturally formed cavities in the Earth are a cold dark mystery that leave you feeling uneasy and safe all at once - I love that.
Recently, my family and I had the privilege of exploring the Smoke Hole Caverns of West Virginia with friends. As we walked the slippery steps and crouched through tight spaces there was a mixture of awe, fear, curiosity and caution amongst the different members of my family.
I had this alluring vision of an art piece that could make you feel like you had a “piece” of that cavern experience.
The simplicity of water dripping over time creates such stunning formations. In the same way, I wanted to use what would seem to be the less exciting parts of a piano - it’s legs - to make something that evokes wonder and curiosity. The shade and sheen are meant to mirror the misty mineral finish of the caverns stalactites and stalagmites.
Additionally, the “feet” are made of the original casters from the piano legs used for Stalegtite.
